history

The Diocese of Chersonese goes back to the Russian Orthodox Exarchate for Western Europe, which was created in the 19th century for the Orthodox Russians living in Western Europe and had its center in the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Paris, which was built from 1859 to 1861 . On the eve of the October Revolution , Bishop Eulogius Georgijewski presided over the diocese. In response to the Soviet persecution of the church, Eulogius left the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate in 1931 and subordinated his eparchy to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople . The believers who remained with the Moscow Patriarchate founded the Three Hierarchs Congregation in Paris that same year with a provisional church. In 1945 there was a brief reunification under Eulogius' leadership, but after his death in 1946 most of the eparchy with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral returned to the Constantinople jurisdiction; they form the exarchate of the Orthodox communities of Russian tradition in Western Europe .

After the end of the Soviet Union, the Russian Orthodox Church was given a privileged state position again, and the Orthodox Russians who subsequently emigrated to Western Europe adhered to the Moscow Patriarchate. The diocese of Chersonese was created for them at the end of the 1980s and initially had its seat in the Church of the Three Hierarchs. In 2006 the territory of Italy was separated from the diocese.

Bishop Nestor Sirotenko has headed the diocese since 2010 .

In 2016, after long planning and negotiations, the Trinity Cathedral with a cultural and meeting center was completed at a central location in Paris, financed by the Russian state.
