Mullaitivu ( Tamil முல்லைத்தீவு Mullaittīvu [ ˈmulːɛi̯t̪ːiːʋɯ ], Sinhala මුලතිව Mulativa [ ˈmulət̪iʋə ]; also: Mullaithivu, Mullaitheevu ) is a city in northern Sri Lanka. It is located on the east coast in the Vanni region and is the administrative seat of the Mullaitivu district of the northern province .

Mullaitivu is located in the Tamil- populated north of Sri Lanka. The city is one of the areas that were claimed by Tamil separatists as part of an independent Tamil Eelam state and was affected by the civil war in Sri Lanka (1983-2009). In the early stages of the war, the Sri Lankan army maintained a large base in Mullaitivu. The rebel organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) captured Mullaitivu on July 25, 1996 and controlled the city until the end of the civil war. In the course of their offensive in the final phase of the war, the Sri Lankan army captured Mullaitivu on January 25, 2009 as a city held by the LTTE.

In addition to the civil war, Mullaitivu was badly affected by the tsunami disaster on December 26, 2004 . A large part of the city was destroyed, and a total of 3,000 people were killed in the Mullaitivu district.
