- Brussels / Belgium : The European Commission expects Germany's gross domestic product to grow by zero percent in price-adjusted terms for 2009 and one percent for 2010. The reason for the unfavorable assessment is the global financial crisis and adjustments to the real estate market in a number of countries .
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : After a loss of 285 million euros in the third quarter in the wake of the financial crisis , Commerzbank is using the Financial Market Stabilization Act . - Washington, DC / United States : Barack Obama ( Democratic Party ) emerges victorious from the 56th presidential election . In the US, which once granted slavery on a large scale , Obama is the first US president with a “colored” parent: however, he is not a descendant of African-American slaves. - Hildesheim / Germany : According to the tax estimate , the tax revenue for the local authorities for 2009 is one billion euros higher than was estimated by the “Tax Estimation” working group in the spring.
- California / United States : In various Californian cities like Los Angeles , San Francisco and San Diego there are demonstrations against Proposition 8 , a successful referendum to abolish same-sex marriage .
- London / United Kingdom : The Bank of England cuts the key rate by 1.5 percentage points to 3.0%.

- Berlin / Germany : The Expert Council for the Assessment of Macroeconomic Development presents its annual report 2008/2009 with the title " Mastering the financial crisis - strengthening growth forces". For 2009, the council predicts a rate of change in gross domestic product for Germany of 0.0 percent after adjustment for prices.
- Bern / Switzerland : Federal Councilor Samuel Schmid , Head of the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport , announced his resignation on December 31, 2008.
- Brussels / Belgium : The European Union imposed a record fine on a car glass cartel consisting of the Japanese Asahi group, the French company Saint Gobain , Pilkington in Great Britain and Soliver in Belgium.
- New York / United States : In its latest world population report, the UN Population Fund UNFPA calculates an increase in the planet's population to 6.75 billion people this year. Four billion of them live in Asia alone . The world population is expected to increase further to 9.2 billion people by 2050.
- Pyongyang / North Korea : North Korea has announced the closure of the border to South Korea and is reacting to an alleged intensification of the confrontation course of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak .
- Sindelfingen / Germany : The collective bargaining parties for the metal and electrical industry have reached an agreement. From February 1, 2009, the fees will be increased by 2.1 percent and from May 2009 by a total of 4.2 percent. The second increase can be postponed by up to seven months in accordance with a voluntary company agreement . The term of the agreement is 19 months, until April 2010. For the months of November and December 2008 as well as January 2009 there is a total one-off payment of 510 euros, which will be paid in December 2008. From May to December 2009, employees receive additional one-off payments per month of 0.4 percent of a monthly wage.

- Hangzhou / China : At least three people die when a subway tunnel under construction collapses and 18 more are buried.

Instead of the 1.7 percent predicted on November 12 for 2008, economists are now only assuming 1.5 percent, said the President of the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW), Wolfgang Franz , in Stuttgart. For 2009 the council of experts predicts a minus of 0.2 percent. So far, the economic researchers had assumed 0.0 percent.
