Tuesday July 1, 2008
- Ankara / Turkey : As part of the investigation into the Ergenekon underground movement , 21 people, including two retired four-star generals, are arrested
- Berlin / Germany : The reform of long-term care insurance brings noticeable improvements, especially for people with dementia in need of care . There is more money for the approximately 20 million retirees . With a new child screening examination , a gap in the screening calendar is closed. And children and adolescents will in future be better protected from violence in the media.
- The Hague / Netherlands : The smoking ban on tobacco in public spaces comes into force across the country. This also includes inns , restaurants and coffee shops .
- Düsseldorf / Germany : In North Rhine-Westphalia the smoking ban in restaurants comes into force. It does not apply to closed events, tent events and beer gardens . If there is a separate smoking room in the restaurant, smoking is allowed there.
- Paris / France : France takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from Slovenia . The Office of the Government of the EC receives Nicolas Sarkozy .

- Ankara / Turkey : The government of the Islamic-conservative ruling party AKP arrests several former military generals, opposition journalists and prominent opponents of the AKP by the police.
- Bogotá / Colombia : The opposition candidate Íngrid Betancourt and other hostages are released from FARC captivity .
- St. Louis / United States : The US company Chrysler closes a minivan plant in St. Louis. The US auto market is changing due to high gasoline prices and financing difficulties as a result of the financial crisis in the US credit market. Consumers are switching to smaller cars from foreign manufacturers that use less fuel.

- Karlsruhe / Germany : The Federal Constitutional Court overturns parts of the federal election law.
- Nicosia / Cyprus : The Cypriot Parliament approves the Lisbon Treaty . Cyprus is the second country after the United Kingdom to ratify the treaty after an Irish “no”.
Friday 4th July 2008
- Berlin / Germany : The petrol prices for premium petrol skip 1.60 euros and for diesel 1.56 euros per liter. Economists fear that the high fuel prices will endanger up to 140,000 jobs in Germany.
- Minsk / Belarus : At a final concert for the Independence Day celebrations, around 50 people were injured in a bomb explosion shortly after midnight. President Aljaksandr Lukashenka gets an idea of the rescue work.
- Olympia / Greece : German researchers announce that they have discovered the ancient hippodrome in Olympia .
- Tskhinvali / Georgia : The conflict between Georgia and the breakaway republic of South Ossetia is escalating. After an attack by Georgian troops in the night, the internationally unrecognized government of South Ossetia announced a general mobilization . It was said from Georgia that its own troops were fired at first and should have responded. Russia announced that in the event of further aggression it would, if necessary, strengthen its troops in South Ossetia. Three people were killed and at least ten injured in the fighting. From South Ossetia it was said that Georgia had shelled the republic from three sides with grenade launchers and had also used firearms in the capital Tskhinvali.

- London / United Kingdom : American Venus Williams wins the women's singles tournament at the Wimbledon Championships in tennis against her sister Serena Williams .
- Tbilisi / Georgia : During the night, Georgia's Deputy Defense Minister Batu Kutelia announced that if the conflict situation in South Ossetia worsened in the next 48 hours, Georgia would put its armed forces in maximum combat readiness using all available troops. In May, Georgia put its armed forces in heightened combat readiness when Russia sent additional troops to the Abkhazia breakaway region . Reporters estimate that Georgia has pulled up to 12,000 soldiers near Abkhazia.

- London / United Kingdom : Rafael Nadal from Spain wins the men's singles tournament of the Wimbledon Championships in tennis against Roger Federer from Switzerland in five sets.
Monday 7th July 2008
- England / United Kingdom : The General Synod of the Anglican Church of England advocates the unrestricted admission of women to the office of bishop .
- Tōyako / Japan : The heads of state of the Group of Eight and the President of the European Commission meet for the 34th World Economic Summit .
- Vienna / Austria : The ÖVP announced new elections in a press conference this morning. Faymann becomes the top candidate of the SPÖ . Still-Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer announces that he will no longer be available.

- The Hague / Netherlands : The First Chamber of the States General approves the Lisbon Treaty . This makes the Netherlands the third country to have ratified the treaty after the Irish “no”.
- Drôme / France : In the Tricastin nuclear power plant near Avignon , 30 cubic meters of radioactive liquid leak and some of it gets into the surrounding rivers.

- Persian Gulf : Iran tested medium-range missiles of the type Shahab-3 with an estimated range of up to 2,000 kilometers.
Friday July 11, 2008
- Cologne / Germany : After an ICE 3 derailed at Cologne Central Station due to a broken axle on July 8, the fleet of 67 vehicles was largely shut down from midnight. As a result, there are extensive train cancellations
- Parangua / Venezuela : rapprochement between Colombia and Venezuela. The heads of state of the two Andean countries , Hugo Chávez and Álvaro Uribe , meet at a refinery center on the Venezuelan Caribbean coast . Special attention is paid to the summit because as recently as March both countries were on the verge of war because of the attack by the Colombian military on positions of the FARC rebels. Chavez sees the FARC as a legitimate negotiating party.
- Russia : The Russian military is training in the North Caucasus for the invasion of southern neighboring Georgia . If a military escalation of the Georgian conflict threatens, Russia would invade Georgia, according to a military spokesman, to protect the people of Abkhazia and South Ossetia .

- Paris / France : With the mediation of French President Nicolas Sarkozy , Syria and Lebanon will resume the diplomatic relations they had broken off in 2005.

- Garmisch-Partenkirchen / Germany : Two German participants in a mountain running competition to the summit of the Zugspitze die of exhaustion and hypothermia . The event was not canceled despite the bad weather forecast.
- Paris / France : The 27 EU countries and 17 Mediterranean countries found the Union for the Mediterranean in Paris . Projects such as the cleaning of the Mediterranean, a new road connection across North Africa and the expansion of solar energy are planned.
- United States : In the wake of the financial crisis from 2007 onwards, the US authorities give the two mortgage financiers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac security commitments. The two mortgage lenders will have access to Federal Reserve loans . The United States Treasury Department can also provide them with loans or equity.

- The Hague / Netherlands : The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court , Luis Moreno Ocampo , has applied for an arrest warrant for the Sudanese President Umar al-Bashir for the genocide in Darfur .
- Halle / Germany : With a ceremony in Halle , the Leopoldina, founded in 1652, is named the German National Academy of Sciences .
- Leuven / Belgium : The Belgian brewery group InBev takes over the American group Anheuser-Busch Companies .
- Paris / France : One day after the founding meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean, the Syrian President Assad takes part in the traditional military parade on the occasion of the French national holiday alongside the Prime Minister of Israel , Ehud Olmert and Egypt's President Mubarak in the official gallery . The Syrian secret service is suspected of an attack on UN soldiers in Beirut , in which 58 French people were killed in 1983. Activists from the organization Reporters Without Borders protested Assad's participation on the sidelines of the parade and were arrested.

- Berlin / Germany : The German federal government agrees on a compromise on the statutory minimum wage .
- Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia : The Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is arrested by security forces in Kuala Lumpur after a young employee reported him at the end of June for “illegal homosexual activity”. The married Ibrahim had previously denied the allegations and described himself as the victim of a plot to destroy his political career.

- Brussels / Belgium : The Belgian king does not accept the resignation of Prime Minister Yves Leterme .
- United States : The chip manufacturer AMD announces that the AMD boss Héctor Ruiz will give up his position as CEO . His successor will be long-term employee and previous Chief Operating Officer ' Dirk Meyer '. He was instrumental in the development of the K7 - Athlon processor.

- Braunschweig / Germany : Demonstration in front of the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety because of the re-approval of a Bayer pesticide. The demonstration took place against the background of the reintroduction of the plant protection product clothianidin . This means, approved as "plant protection", had triggered bee deaths of around 330 million individual honeybees during agricultural use in Baden-Württemberg and the Upper Rhine in recent months .
- Dortmund / Germany : The Love Parade takes place in Dortmund.

- Erfurt / Germany : Start of the new 3rd league in the Erfurt Steigerwald Stadium with the opening game of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt against Dynamo Dresden 0: 1.
- Manila / Philippines : A Boeing 747-400 from Qantas Airways with 350 passengers has to make an emergency landing in Manila due to an approximately eight square meter hole in the fuselage.

- Ahmedabad , Gujarat / India : A series of at least 16 bomb attacks resulted in at least 45 dead and over 100 injured. The Indian Mujahideen terrorist group are committed to the terrorist attacks .
- Rome / Italy : Despite sharp protests by the opposition, the government of the President of the Council of Ministers, Silvio Berlusconi, declares a nationwide state of emergency because of the increase in illegal immigration from Africa across the Mediterranean .

- Istanbul / Turkey : Two bomb attacks on a shopping center in the Güngören district leave at least 17 dead and 154 injured. The attacks are attributed to the Kurdish Workers' Party PKK .
- Paris / France : The 95th Tour de France 2008 ends in Paris with an overall victory for Spanish cyclist Carlos Sastre from the Danish team CSC-Saxo Bank .
- Beijing / China : Opening of the Olympic Village for the 2008 Olympic Games .

- Ankara / Turkey : At the request of the Prosecutor General Abdurrahman Yalçınkaya , the Constitutional Court begins its negotiations on a ban proceedings against the ruling party Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP) led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan .
- Baghdad / Iraq : More than 50 people die in a series of attacks. Three assassins blow up themselves in Baghdad, another in Kirkuk . A shootout and another bomb attack in a small town claim more victims.
- Hamburg / Germany : The first Airbus A380 is delivered in Hamburg . This aircraft, which costs around 210 million euros, goes to the Emirates airline and is only one of 58 A380 aircraft that have been ordered. A total of 198 A380s have been ordered.
- Moscow / Russia : Robert Dudley, head of the British-Russian oil company TNK-BP , flees Russia.
- Weston-super-Mare / United Kingdom : A fire completely destroys the 100-year-old historic pier in the southwestern English coastal town.

- The Hague / Netherlands : Radovan Karadžić is flown to Rotterdam that night , later on to Scheveningen , to be handed over to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia , before which he has to answer for genocide and crimes against humanity .
- Düsseldorf / Germany : The Arbitration Commission of the SPD NRW decides to expel the former NRW Prime Minister and Federal Minister Wolfgang Clement because of his critical comments on the state elections in Hesse in 2008.
- Harare / Zimbabwe : In view of the hyperinflation in Zimbabwe with inflation rates of more than 2.2 million percent, the central bank announces the introduction of a new currency on August 1st. Like the previous currency, this will be called the Zimbabwe dollar , but will have ten zeros less.
- Karlsruhe / Germany : In a fundamental decision, the Federal Constitutional Court declares the non-smoking protection laws of the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Berlin to be largely unconstitutional . The absolute ban on smoking in small pubs is unconstitutional.
- Romania , Ukraine : July 2008 flood disaster in Ukraine and Romania: almost 36,000 people are evacuated and at least 26 people are killed. In the region, a German tourist group of 200 people was evacuated by helicopter.

- Hamburg / Germany : The light artist Michael Batz illuminates numerous ships and buildings at the Cruise Days in the Port of Hamburg .
- Beijing / China : China during the Olympic Games access to the Beijing Internet censor for Olympiareporter which announces International Olympic Committee to.
- Rome / Italy : Italy ratifies the Lisbon Treaty . The Chamber of Deputies unanimously adopted the Reform Treaty, which is supposed to put the EU on a new basis. The Italian Senate had already voted unanimously for the contract last week.
- United States : NASA confirms evidence of water on Mars by the Phoenix spacecraft .
