Michael Batz

Michael Batz (born August 25, 1951 in Hanover ) is a German author , dramaturge , director and light artist .

Batz completed a degree in German studies , history and philosophy at the University of Marburg , which he graduated with the first state examination in 1976 and the second state examination in 1979. He has lived and worked in Hamburg since 1976 .

In the mid-1970s he and Horst Schroth founded the independent theater group “Theater between Door and Angel” in Hamburg. Numerous productions in the field of street and children's theater followed . As a contribution to the boycott movement against the intended 1987 census , he toured with Horst Schroth and Achim Konejung in the spring of the same year in a so-called “Census Review '87” with great success through many cities in the Federal Republic of Germany. From 1990 to 1994 he was a dramaturge at Kampnagel and then took over the artistic direction of the HafenKulturtage and the theater in the Speicherstadt , where his Hamburg Jedermann is performed every summer .

Today he mainly appears with his light installations. In addition to many lighting in Hamburg (including lighting in the Speicherstadt ), he developed lighting plans for Cologne (banks of the Rhine) and Uelzen . During the 2006 World Cup, he illuminated the Berlin Reichstag and set up Blue Goals on the roofs of Hamburg. In August 2008, 30 ships and buildings in and around the Port of Hamburg were illuminated with 2000 blue light sources for the event of the Cruise Days . A BluePort (blue port) has also been implemented at the Cruise Days 2010 by lighting of 50 buildings, ships and bridges again.

On April 20, 2012, he illuminated the Bergedorf Castle as part of the 2nd Bergedorfer Art Show.

Michael Batz's third Hamburg Blue Port was held from August 13th to 19th, 2012. The highlight of this year was the blue-illuminated Elbphilharmonie, where the future roof structure with steel cables and blue lights could already be seen. But the rest of the Hamburg harbor was lit up in blue again.

Batz is also the author of numerous non-fiction books, plays and radio plays.

Michael Batz received the special prize of the Rolf Mares Prize of the Hamburg theaters in 2011 and the Biermann Ratjen Medal in 2014 . In 2018 he was appointed honorary lock keeper of the Congregation of Alster lock keepers.
