- Detroit , United States : Automobile manufacturer General Motors announces that it will close four plants in Canada , Mexico and the United States that manufacture pickups .
- Helena , Pierre / United States : The area code for United States presidential election in 2008 the Democrats in Montana ends with a victory of Barack Obama the so achieves the required majority of the delegates' votes in order for the election to, the United States President to be nominated. His opponent Hillary Clinton , who wins the primary in South Dakota on the same day , does not yet congratulate Obama, although the series of primary elections has ended.
- South Thuringia / Germany : During tunnel construction work, a second stalactite cave is discovered in Bleßberg in the Thuringian Slate Mountains , which is located next to the already known Bleßberg cave .
- Wiesbaden / Germany : SPD , Die Linke and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen are abolishing tuition fees in the state of Hesse .

- Krško / Slovenia : EU triggers Europe-wide alarm after an incident at the Krško nuclear power plant . According to the EU Commission, cooling water leaked from the main cooling system. There are currently no known effects on the environment.
- United States : After heavy rains in the states of Illinois , Iowa , Indiana , Michigan , Minnesota , Missouri and Wisconsin , flooding occurs in the following days.

- Ankara / Turkey : On Thursday the Turkish Constitutional Court declared the constitutional amendment by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government to lift the headscarf ban at universities to be inadmissible.

- Berlin / Germany : The German Bundestag adopts a climate package. The share of renewable energies in electricity consumption is to be doubled to 30 percent by 2020.
- Cologne / Germany : Stefan Raab wins the first European auto ball championship
- Oslo / Norway : At the Golden League Meeting 2008, Tirunesh Dibaba set a new world record over 5000 m with a time of 14: 11.15 minutes
- Syria : The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was apparently supposed to be overthrown by his brother-in-law Asseff Schaukat , the head of the secret service, through a military coup . But the coup was thwarted shortly before it was carried out. Several officers have been in custody since then. The takeover was to take place during the meeting of the Arab League in Damascus at the end of March.

- Paris / France : Spanish professional tennis player Rafael Nadal won the French Open for the fourth time in a row ; in the women the Serbian Ana Ivanović was successful.

- Khartoum / Sudan : An Airbus A310 from Sudan Airways from Amman / Jordan with 203 passengers and 14 crew members on board comes off the runway on landing and goes up in flames. At least 28 passengers are killed.
- United States : At least 10 people die in severe flooding after heavy rains in the American Midwest .

- Gransee / Germany : Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomes the American President George W. Bush to his farewell visit in the guest house of the federal government Schloss Meseberg in Gransee in the Oberhavel district in the north of Brandenburg .
- Oslo / Norway : marriage is opened nationwide for same-sex couples in Norway.
- Paris / France : the number of planets in the solar system is reduced from 9 to 8. - California / United States : The Jason-2 weather satellite has started. Jason-2 is supposed to record the extent and movements of the oceans - and thereby provide information on climate changes.
- New York / United States : The New York Times newspaper reported on Friday, citing US government officials, that Israel had rehearsed an air strike against Iranian nuclear facilities as part of a maneuver in the eastern Mediterranean .

- Forvik / United Kingdom : Stuart Hill declares the small Shetland island of Forvik to be independent from Scotland and from the entire Kingdom.
- Manila / Philippines : Typhoon Fengshen claims at least 137 people ashore in the Philippines. During the storm, a ferry with 864 people on board sank, 68 of whom have so far been found alive and 27 bodies.
