Parliamentary elections in Mongolia 2008

The 2008 Mongolian parliamentary elections , in which the deputies of the Great State of Chural of Mongolia were determined, took place on June 29, 2008. According to initial estimates, voter turnout was around 74 percent.

Result

The election brought a victory for the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MRVP) under its chairman and Mongolian Prime Minister Sandschaagiin Bajar . The opposition Democratic Party (DP) fell well short of its expectations. Its chairman, Tsachiagiin Elbegdorsch , spoke of election manipulation.

Riots

After the first results were announced, demonstrations and violent riots broke out in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator ; Opposition supporters broke into the building of the MRVP and the building caught fire. Five people were killed. The Mongolian President Nambaryn Enchbajar subsequently imposed a four-day state of emergency on the country.
