In 1972 homosexual acts were legalized. The age of consent is 16 years and is therefore equal to heterosexuals today .

Anti-discrimination laws

Norway became the first country in the world to introduce an anti-discrimination law in 1981 , which prohibits unequal treatment of people based on their sexual orientation. Homosexual people are also not excluded from military service.

Same-sex marriage

Norway passed a civil partnership law in 1993 . Homosexual couples are allowed to adopt their partner's biological children . On June 11, 2008, the Norwegian Parliament passed a law opening up marriage to homosexual couples, which came into force on January 1, 2009.

Churches are allowed to hold same-sex weddings, but are not required to do so. In April 2016, the Lutheran Church of Norway allowed its priests to marry homosexual couples. In January 2017, the Norwegian Church developed a liturgy for the marriage of same-sex couples . Priests are still allowed to refuse weddings, but they are not allowed to forbid a couple to attend the wedding service in a particular church.

Social situation

In Norway there is a gay scene in the capital Oslo . The most important LGBT civil rights organization in Norway is Fri - foreningen for kjønns- og seksualitetsmangfold . Most Norwegians are very friendly and liberal towards homosexual people. A 2007 opinion poll by Synovate MMI , one of the largest market research companies in the country, asked the Norwegian population for their opinion on 'gender-neutral marriage' found that 61% of Norwegians are in favor of this marriage. In addition, Norway, as known in Scandinavian countries, is now one of the most tolerant and liberal countries when it comes to homosexuality. Over 80% were in favor of same-sex marriage in 2017.
