Homosexuality in Greece

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Although homosexuality is respected in Greece , Greece is regarded as a Southeastern European country that is socially only slowly liberalizing with regard to LGBT issues.

legality

Homosexuality , lived by mutual consent among adult men , was legalized in Greece in 1951, so it is free from punishment.

The age of consent for homosexual intercourse was 2015 that of the heterosexual not equal ( Article 347 of the Criminal Code) and was 17 years, while it was 15 years for heterosexual contacts. On December 23, 2015, the Greek parliament decided to adjust the age of consent to 15 years, as well as to abolish the above criminal restrictions.

Anti-discrimination laws

An Anti-Discrimination Act has existed since 2005, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the areas of employment, education, property, health care, and access to goods and services. The law was the implementation of the anti-discrimination legislation of the European Union . In 2004 the Greek National Broadcasting Council attempted to end an LGBT radio show.

Recognition of same-sex partnerships

In November 2013, Greece was convicted by the European Court of Justice because the registered partnership existing in Greece is only designed for heterosexual couples. After two failed attempts in November 2013 and September 2014, the Greek parliament decided in December 2015 to introduce registered civil partnerships for homosexuals. The rights and obligations in questions of tax and security are largely the same as in marriage; However, it is not possible to adopt a common surname. Adoption by registered partners is also not possible, although in Greece individuals can adopt children. [obsolete] On the other hand, homosexual couples who live in a registered partnership are allowed to take in foster children.

Social situation

Athens Gay Pride 2008

While homosexuality was accepted in ancient Greece and even admired and promoted in Sparta, in the modern Christian-Orthodox state the attitude of society is more reserved. In particular, there is a rural-urban divide in Greece. Social liberalization is only slowly becoming noticeable. A LGBT - community is found mainly in the capital Athens (district Gazi ) and in Thessaloniki . The islands of Mykonos and Lesbos ( Eresos ) are homosexual destinations where an LGBT community can be found in the summer months. A CSD (Athens Pride) takes place annually in Athens. An annual pride has also been held in Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki, since 2012. The Mayor of Thessaloniki Yiannis Boutaris is considered a public supporter of this Pride. Another Gay Pride has been taking place in Greece's third largest city, Patras , since 2014 . A 2010 poll found that 63.9% of Greeks are in favor of registered partnerships for same-sex couples.
