Homosexual acts have been legal in North Macedonia since 1996. An anti-discrimination law to protect sexual orientation , which is required by the European Parliament as a prerequisite for EU accession, was passed by parliament in May 2019.

Recognition of same-sex couples

No law allows same-sex marriage or registered partnership in North Macedonia . A legal recognition of same-sex couples by the state is still pending. In September 2013 and January 2015 attempts to constitutionally prohibit same-sex marriage failed.

Social situation

Only the capital Skopje has a small homosexual community . An alliance for sexual and health-related rights campaigns for the rights of homosexual people in the country.
