Anti-discrimination laws

An anti-discrimination law to protect sexual orientation in the areas of employment, education, property, health care, and access to goods and services has existed since 2004. The law is the implementation of the anti-discrimination regulations of the European Union .

Recognition of same-sex couples

State recognition took place in 2014 in the form of a registered partnership . In March 2010, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi announced a registered partnership law in Malta that was not implemented by parliament. After winning the parliamentary election, Joseph Muscat's social democratic government launched a bill in October 2013 to introduce a civil partnership institute in Malta. On April 14, 2014, the draft law was passed in the Parliament of Malta . In July 2017, the Parliament of Malta approved marriage for same-sex couples. 66 MPs out of 67 voted in favor of the government's proposal, and only one MP from the conservative opposition voted against it.

Social situation

A small LGBT - community is found mainly in the capital Valletta . In July 2010 a Pride March and a Pride Week with film screenings took place in Valletta .
