Homosexuality is legal in the Republic of Moldova , but within Europe Moldova is one of the more restrictive countries in terms of its attitude towards homosexuality.

legality

Homosexual acts have been legal in Moldova since 1995. The age of consent is uniformly 14 years. In May 2012, the parliament passed an anti-discrimination law to protect sexual orientation in labor law and education in accordance with European requirements , which came into force on January 1, 2013.

After local councils in some cities of Moldova had passed municipal regulations prohibiting advertising of homosexuality since 2010, the Moldovan parliament passed a law in July 2013 that forbids the dissemination of information “ relating to prostitution, pedophilia, pornography or any other Relationship outside of marriage and family touts ”. The provision is based on a law that was passed shortly before in Russia . In October 2013, this law was repealed in the Moldovan parliament because the Moldovan government is seeking an EU association agreement.

The Anti-Discrimination Act is also criminally enforced. In June 2014, Nicolae Vladimirovici Mihăescu , Moldovan Orthodox bishop of the Bălți and Făleşti eparchy , was fined 10,000 lei in 2012 for making anti- gay statements . He was also ordered to pay the costs of 12,000 lei and a public apology. Mihăescu, who goes by the bishop's name Marchel, had claimed that 92% of all homosexuals were HIV-infected and said he did not want to see them on the street.

Recognition of same-sex couples

Same-sex marriage and registered partnership are not legally allowed in Moldova . The state has not yet legally recognized same-sex couples.

Social situation

A small homosexual community can be found in the capital Chișinău . The LGBT organization GenderDoc-M campaigns for the rights of homosexual people in Moldova. In 2008, violent acts against participants in the demonstration took place at a CSD.
