Homosexuality has been legal in the Republic of Cyprus since 1998 . The Law on Legalization and Repeal of Article 171 of the Cyprus Criminal Code was passed by the Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus in 1998. The age of consent has been 17 years since 2002.

Anti-discrimination laws

An anti-discrimination law has existed at the legal level since 2004, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the areas of employment, education, property, health care and access to goods and services. The law was issued as an implementation of the anti-discrimination legislation of the European Union .

Recognition of same-sex couples

Same-sex marriage is not allowed in Cyprus . Since 2013, the government has been preparing a bill to establish a registered partnership in Cyprus. On November 26, 2015, the Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus endorsed a Registered Partnership in the Republic of Cyprus that is open to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples.

Social situation

In 1987/88 the LGBT organization Cypriot Gay Liberation Movement ( AKOK or Apeleftherotiko Kinima Omofilofilon Kiprou ) was founded. In 2007 the LGBT organization Initiative Against Homophobia was started in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . A small LGBT community can be found in the capital Nicosia and in the port city of Limassol . A 2014 survey found that 53.3% of the Cypriot population are in favor of registered partnerships for same-sex couples.
