In Qatar , in line with traditional Islamic morals , homosexuality is forbidden. There is no legal recognition of same-sex marriages or cohabiting partnerships.

The main source of jurisdiction in Qatar is Sharia law . Sexual acts between women and men are prohibited in Qatar. According to Article 201 of the Penal Code of 1971, “ sodomy ” is punishable by up to five years in prison, regardless of gender. There are known cases where non-citizens of Qatar have also been placed under criminal law. In 1996, a US citizen received a six-month prison sentence and 90 lashes.

After Qatar was promised the World Cup in 2022 , FIFA President Sepp Blatter said that he asked homosexual fans to refrain from sex during the World Cup out of respect for the host country. After this triggered severe criticism, Blatter apologized for this statement.
