Homosexuality in the Maldives

Homosexuality in the Maldives is criminalized by the legal system, homosexual acts are punishable.

Legal position

The Maldives are homosexual acts punishable by law. The Maldives Criminal Code prohibits sexual intercourse between people of the same sex in Section 411, Paragraph 2. Homosexual intercourse can be punished with prison terms ranging from six months to four years. Paragraph 6d in Section 411 allows, in addition to imprisonment, an additional penalty of 100 lashes, which is justified with Sharia law.

Social situation

Due to the illegality, there are no LGBT communities in the Maldives.
