Homosexuality in Sri Lanka

Geographical location of Sri Lanka

Homosexuality is more socially tolerated in Sri Lanka , but it is illegal under Article 365A of the Constitution , although no prosecution takes place.

legality

Article 365A of the Constitution generally forbids "gross indecency" without reference to gender. Thus it applies to both homosexual and heterosexual acts. Article 365A is de facto not used and homosexuality is therefore not punished. While members of the Sri Lankan government opposed the legalization of homosexuality in January 2017, Deputy Attorney General Nerin Pulle reported in November 2017 that the government would decriminalize homosexual activity.

Social situation

Homosexuality is not condemned by the two dominant religions, Hinduism and Buddhism , and is even supported by the former. Other sexual orientations are tolerated but are not common in public.
