In Vietnam , homosexuality is allowed, even if heterosexual love - due to state restrictions - is not on the same level. So far, homosexuality has hardly been discussed in public.

Vietnamese criminal law does not criminalize homosexual acts . The age of consent is uniformly 18 years. Male prostitution is illegal.

Anti-discrimination laws

There is no statutory protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation .

Recognition of same-sex partnerships

A same-sex marriage or registered partnership has not yet legal in Vietnam; however, same-sex weddings were legalized in the form of an unregistered partnership in November 2013. Vietnam was the first country to lift its 1992 constitutional ban on same-sex marriages.

Social situation

In Vietnam , sexuality is generally lived in private and not shown in public. A small homosexual community can be found primarily in the largest city in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, and to a lesser extent in the capital Hanoi .

On August 5, 2012, the first Gay Pride Parade took place in Hanoi with around 100 participants, which was not approved but was not stopped by the state security forces. The Justice Department is currently considering allowing same-sex marriages.
