from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Homosexuality isillegal and taboo in society in Syria .

illegality

In Syria, homosexual acts as "unnatural" sexual acts are prohibited by Article 520 of the 1949 Criminal Code and are punishable by a prison sentence of up to three years. Unlike in other Middle Eastern countries , such as Iran or Saudi Arabia , homosexual acts have been less prosecuted in recent years. The threat of persecution for homosexual men still exists and arrests by the Syrian secret service cannot be ruled out. The application of criminal law is more often limited to sex with minors. However, there are always cases in which homosexual men are persecuted by the state.

Anti-discrimination laws

Anti-discrimination laws do not exist because of the illegality.

Recognition of same-sex couples

Because of the illegality is Syria neither same-sex marriage nor a registered partnership authorized by law; Same-sex partnerships that have been concluded in other countries are not recognized in Syria.

Social situation

Due to its illegality, there are no LGBT communities in Syria . Homosexual people are pushed into the social underground. In general, social life is severely restricted due to the strict religious regulations and state surveillance by the police and the secret service . The social pressure to start a heterosexual family with children is high in Syria. Often the spouse is chosen by the parents.
