Although the subject of homosexuality has been discussed in public in Cambodia for several years, same-sex love is still hardly accepted in the Buddhist state and is largely taboo in private life.

Recognition of same-sex civil partnerships

In February 2004, former King Norodom Sihanouk wrote on his website that he was impressed with the opportunity for same-sex couples to get married in San Francisco and that if his people wanted the same, he would approve it.

King Sihanouk also said that he believed that homosexuals and transvestites were equal before God because "God likes a variety of preferences". However, the statements of the former king are not necessarily met with great understanding in the country and since the monarch has no executive power, no laws regarding same-sex partnerships have been passed.

Social situation

An annual gay pride has been held in the capital, Phnom Penh, since 2004 . In 2006 about 400 people took part, who marched for more cultural diversity and wanted to educate people about health issues. The first official gay pub opened in Siem Reap .
