Maiski ( Russian Ма́йский ) is a city in the Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in the North Caucasus . It is the capital of the Rajons of the same name and has 26,755 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

Maiski is located near the northern slope of the Greater Caucasus on the Terek River , about 40 kilometers southwest of the republic capital Nalchik . Closest towns are Prochladny , Terek and Nartkala (all three about 15 km from Maiski).

history

In 1819 the military outpost "Prischib" was founded on the military road to Georgia , which was reorganized in 1829 into Stanitsa "Prischibskaya". In 1875 the "Kotlyarevskaya" railway station was built three kilometers to the south and is still in operation today. In 1888 a settlement was founded around Stanitsa, which was renamed “Prischibski” in 1920 and “Maiski” in 1925, literally “ Maistadt ”.

The settlement and the Stanitsa were united in 1959. In 1965, the resulting community received city status.

economy

As the center of an agricultural district, Maiski is still important for food production. There is also a reinforced concrete plant and a factory for X-ray machines in the city .
