Kashchatau ( Russian Кашхатау , Karachay - Balkar Къашхатау ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria ( Russia ) with 5295 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located on the north side of the Greater Caucasus, almost 20 km as the crow flies south of the center of the republic capital Nalschik on the Tscherek , a right tributary of the Baksan .

Kashchatau is the administrative center of the Tscherekski Rajon , which occupies the eastern section of the high-mountain part of the republic. Most of the inhabitants of the Rajons as well as the settlement are Balkars .

history

Kaschchatau emerged from an old Balkar village. The exact year of foundation is unknown, archival materials point to the 17th century.

In connection with the deportation of the entire Balkar people to Central Asia, it was renamed Sovetskoye in 1944 . The place kept this name after the rehabilitation and return of the Balkars from 1957. The original name was only restored by order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR on December 16, 1991. Since 1964 the place has had the status of an urban-type settlement.

Attractions

Kashchatau is located on the approach to the part of the Greater Caucasus located on the upper reaches of the Cherek and its tributaries, with mountains such as Dychtau (second highest mountain in Russia) and Shchara (highest mountain in Georgia on the national border , access from the north), as well as the one over there Twelve kilometers long Besengiwand , which rises steeply up to 3000 meters above the glacier of the same name (also Ullu-Tschiran ). The administration of the Kabardino-Balkarian High Mountain Sapowednik , an 82,642 hectare nature reserve created in 1976 in this part of the mountain, has its seat in the settlement .

Economy and Infrastructure

Between 1993 and 2010, RusHydro built the hydroelectric power plant of the same name with an output of 65.1 megawatts on the Tscherek near Kaschchatau , which forms a cascade with another power plant a few kilometers downstream near the village of Auschiger with an output of 63.5 megawatts 2002 was completed. There is a wood processing factory (beech wood parquet) in the village.

The regional road R291 runs through Kaschchatau, which branches off the M29 at Nalschik , follows the left bank of the Tscherek via Auschiger and continues south of Kaschchatau via Babugent to Verkhnyaya Balkarija .
