Nartkala ( Russian Нарткала ) is a city in the North Caucasian Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia with 31,694 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus about 25 km northeast of the republic capital Nalchik between the Cherek and Urwan rivers in the Terek river system .

Nartkala is the administrative center of Urwan Rajon .

The city lies on the Maiski railway line ( Kotlyarevskaya station ) - Nalchik, opened in 1914 . The city's station is called Dokschukino .

history

The place was established in 1913 during the construction of the railway line to Nalchik as a station settlement Dokschukino (Russified form of the Cabardian surname Дохъушыкъуэ / Doh'ushyq'ua), developed into a center for the processing of local agricultural products, especially from the 1930s, and received city rights under this name in 1955.

In 1967 the name was changed to Nartkala ( Turkish language / Balkar for fortress of the Narten ).

In Nartkala there is a plant for ethanol, malt and fodder yeast, a glassworks as well as electrical engineering and food industries (wine, canned food, dairy).
