Irmgard Woldering
Irmgard Elisabeth Woldering , also Irmgart , (born February 26, 1919 in Osnabrück , † April 24, 1969 in Hanover ) was a German Egyptologist and museum director.
Life
Irmgard Woldering was one of four children of bank director Josef Woldering and his wife, CDU politician Carla Woldering . After studying Egyptology , art history and history , she received her doctorate on June 5, 1950 at the University of Munich with a thesis on the memphite art of the New Kingdom . She then began her professional career as a volunteer at the Kestner Museum in Hanover. In 1952 she became head of the Egyptian Department and in 1955 took over the overall management of the museum from Alfred Hentzen , which she held until her death at the age of 50. The city chose the only woman from 23 applicants. In 1956 Woldering was one of the 17 founding members of the Hanoverian section of the Soroptimist service club .
Right from the start, Irmgard Woldering was committed to bringing the museum exhibits closer to the public: “It is up to us to feel them alive. In their day they had a living statement. But what was once valid in human terms remains just as human beings remain the same through changes. We museum people only have to find ways and means to lead the people of our time to empathize, we have to unlock the eternal echoes of life in alien and familiar forms. ”In doing so, she was guided by the“ pride ”of the citizens in the museums in the United States , which is "crowded every Sunday". Their activities were formative for the museum and the perception of ancient Egyptian art in northern Germany. The museum was rebuilt and expanded under her leadership. The exhibitions she organized achieved visitor records at the time. Her lectures, museum tours and scientific publications received a lot of attention.
The Numismatic Society to Hannover wrote on May 29, 1969 to Dr. Irmgard-Woldering promotion price , until the 1980s, domestic to that of 1970 and foreign coins and medals collectors were excellent. The chairman Georg Wimmelmann wrote to Hilde Broër on August 18, 1970 that he wanted to use her draft of a Daphne as the emblem of the award plaque, because he “thinks that this plaque is also something and perhaps a lot in connection with the museum director ... died early (cancer), fatefully at the height of her work, without her being aware of it, having to end her life. She stood alone without any ties, as a woman very self-confident in her scientific artistic world of antiquity ”.
In 2006 the city of Hanover named a street in a new building area in the Seelhorst district after Irmgard Woldering.
