Tschegem ( Russian Чегем ; Kabardian Шэджэм ) is a city in the North Caucasian Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia with 18,019 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus about 10 km north of the republic capital Nalchik on the Tschegem of the same name , a right tributary of the Baksan in the Terek river system .

Tschegem is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

The city is located on the M29 Rostov-on-Don - Azerbaijani border, which is developed like a motorway here.

history

The 1822 than Kundetowo village founded was called from 1920 Tschegem Perwy (Russian for First Tschegem , to distinguish it from the nearby Tschegem Wtoroi , Second Tschegem ), received in 1972 the status of an urban-type settlement and 2000 - without the additional name - a city charter.

Culture and sights

In Tschegem is a memorial museum for the Balkar poet Qaysin Quli ( Karachay-Balkar Къайсын Къули , Russian Кайсын Кулиев Kaissyn Kulijew , 1917-1985), who in the village (aul) Werchni Tschegem ( upper Tschegem was born).

As the center of an agricultural area (cultivation of grain, potatoes, vegetables, sunflowers; keeping of cattle, horses, sheep, goats), Tschegem is the location for companies in the food industry.

Trivia

Tschegem is the place around which many stories of Fasil Iskander revolve.
