Reviews

John Defore wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on March 20, 2006 that the film was too long and contained numerous clichés. The script is too lacking in ideas to create enough dramaturgy; it offers little fun, but a lot of pathos. Kim Basinger doesn't seem convincing.

Stephen Holden wrote in the New York Times on 18 May 2007, the "horror film about gambling addiction" ( "scare movie about gambling addiction" ) is "dark" and "appalling" . He criticized the film for relying too much on shock effects. The character of Victor, embodied by the "uncontrolled" acting Tim Roth, would rather fit into the Saw films.

Robert Koehler wrote in Variety magazine on May 14, 2007 that the film thematized the ethical aspects of the competition, but he hardly digs beneath the surface. Those involved would include hip stars like Forest Whitaker as well as former stars like Kim Basinger and Danny DeVito. The sub-strands of the plot are "mechanically" linked in the third act .
