Tyrnyaus ( Russian Тырныауз , Karachay-Balkar Тарны аууз ) is a city in the North Caucasus Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia with a population of 21,000 (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the Greater Caucasus about 60 km (as the crow flies) southwest of the republic capital Nalschik on the Baksan , a left tributary of the Malka, which flows into the Terek .
Tyrnyaus is the administrative center of the Rajons Elbrus .
The road leads through the town to the tourist and alpine skiing center belonging to the Rajon in the upper Baksantal (below the Elbrus ).
history
Tyrnyaus was built in the 1930s on the site of the old Balkarian village of Girchoschan in connection with the development of a tungsten and molybdenum ore deposit discovered in 1934 . Production began in 1940, and the settlement was called Nizhny Baksan ("Lower Baksan") at that time .
In 1955 the city received the present name city rights (of Balkar tyrnyau usu for narrow canyon ).
In 2000, a significant part of the city was destroyed by a mudslide . In the meantime, however, most of the damage has been repaired.
