Terek ( Russian Терек , Kabardian Тэрч / Tartsch ) is a city in the North Caucasian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia with 19,170 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus about 60 km east of the republic capital Nalchik on the right of the Terek river of the same name .
Terek is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
The city is located on the main line of the North Caucasus Railway ( Rostov-on-Don -) Prochladny - Vladikavkas ( Murtasowo station , distance kilometers 1970 from Moscow ), which was opened in 1875 and is now electrified .
history
In 1875, when the railway line to Vladikavkaz was being built, the small station settlement of Murtasowo was created . In 1920 the construction of an administrative center for the surrounding area, then called Little Kabardei ( Malaja Kabarda ), began here . The new settlement was named after the river, in 1945 urban-type settlement and in 1967 town charter.

economy
The most important company in the city is a factory for diamond tools of Ural-Terek-Almas AG . There are also companies in the food industry (wine, canned food). In the vicinity of the city, wheat and fodder crops are grown and dairy cattle, sheep and horses are kept.
