Valery Kokov ( Russian Валерий Мухамедович Коков , Kabardian КӀуэкӀуэ Валерэ, Мухьэмэд и къуэ * 18th October 1941 in Tyrnyaus , Kabardino-Balkaria ; † 29. October 2005 in Moscow ) from 1990 to 2005, President of Kabardino-Balkaria, a republic of the Russian Federation .

He was chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic from 1990 to 1991 and was first elected president in 1992. He effectively neutralized the opposition and was re-elected twice with landslide victories; 1997 with 98% and 2002 with 87% of the votes. He successfully maintained stability within the republic, despite being close to the war-torn Chechen Republic . Kokow had had cancer for several years . On September 16, 2005, he announced his resignation. He gave no reasons for this - just under a year and a half before the end of his term of office. He remained in office until his successor, Arsen Kanokov , was elected two weeks later .
