Butokukai Scotland
The Butokukai Scotland ( Japanese 蘇格蘭 武 徳 会 ) is a Scottish martial arts association founded in 2011 by the style founder Grand Master Richard Kim (* 1917; † 2001), Hanshi , 10th Dan . The association is a member of Kokusai Butokukai and Butokukai Europe .
The purpose is to promote the traditional martial arts Shorinji Ryu (consisting of Karate Do, Okinawa Kobudo and Tai Chi) and Chi Kung .

history
The name Butokukai goes back to the Dai Nippon Butokukai (DNBK) which was founded in Kyoto , Japan in 1895 with the official approval of the imperial family. Grandmaster Richard Kim became a member of the DNBK in 1939. After the Second World War, the DNBK was dissolved at the urging of the Allies, as the proximity to the paramilitary and ultra-nationalist Black Dragon Society (Armur-Bund) found no goodwill.
After the signing of the peace treaty between the USA and Japan, the DNBK was revived as a private Budo organization in 1953 under the chairmanship of Ōno Kumao . As a close friend of Ōno Kumao, Richard Kim was asked to represent the DNBK outside of Japan. This was the laying of the foundation stone for the Zen Bei Butoku Kai (Great American Martial Arts Association) in 1959 in San Francisco .
The growing international relations beyond the USA to France, Finland and Germany required the establishment of an international martial arts association. So in 1976 the organization Butokukai International came into being under the direction of Richard Kim. After 60 years, Grand Master Richard Kim left the DNBK in 1999 due to domestic political differences. After Richard Kim's death, Butokukai International was dissolved in 2001.
In 1996 Jean Chalamon arranged for the founding of Butokukai Europe in agreement with Richard Kim. Thus, the national associations Butokukai Finland , Butokukai France and Butokukai Germany could be united under a common European roof.
The change of the logo became necessary in 2006 in order to clearly differentiate itself from the DNBK.
Butokukai Scotland was founded in 2011 by Alasdair MacMhaoirn in agreement with Grand Master Jean Chalamon , Hanshi, 10th Dan.

The emblem
The edge symbolizes the virtues of martial arts and the rays with the orange background represent the rising sun. Calligraphy 忍 means "patience".
