history

The name Butokukai goes back to the Dai Nippon Butokukai (DNBK) which was founded in Kyoto , Japan in 1895 with the official approval of the imperial family. Grandmaster Richard Kim became a member of the DNBK in 1939. After the Second World War , the DNBK was dissolved at the urging of the Allies , as the proximity to the paramilitary and ultra-nationalist Black Dragon Society (Armur-Bund) found no goodwill.

After the signing of the peace treaty between the United States and Japan, the DNBK was revived as a private Budo organization in 1953 under the chairmanship of Ōno Kumao . As a close friend of Ōno Kumao, Richard Kim was asked to represent the DNBK outside of Japan. This was the laying of the foundation stone for the Zen Bei Butoku Kai (North American Martial Arts Association) in San Francisco in 1959. After 60 years, Grand Master Richard Kim left the DNBK in 1999 due to domestic political differences. After Richard Kim's death in 2001, Zen Bei Butoku Kai was continued by his senior students.

In 2007 Brian Ricci and Frank Gaviola founded their own association, Zen Bei Butoku-Kai International, and ended their relationship with the international association Kokusai Butokukai (formerly Butokukai International ).

Zen Bei Butoku Kai (founded 1959), based in California, continues to be led by Rod Sanford (Technical Director), Robert Leong (Honorary President) and Louis Jemison (President).

The change of the logo in 2006 became necessary in order to clearly differentiate itself from the DNBK.
