Jean Chalamon (born August 4, 1935 in Cap Saint-Jacques , South Vietnam ) is an international French grand master of martial arts , Hanshi and holder of the 10th Dan of Shorinji ryu ( Karate , Kobudo , Tai Chi ).
He learned under the style founder Richard Kim (* 1917; † 2001), Hanshi, 10th Dan, and is involved as technical director in the establishment of the Kokusai Butokukai (International Martial Arts Federation). Chalamon has been an officer in the French Legion of Honor since 1999.

Jean Chalamon was born on August 4, 1935 in Cap Saint-Jacques, South Vietnam, to his Vietnamese mother and his French father (officer). From 1947 to 1953 he attended the Military Academy in Dalat , South Vietnam, and began his military career here. Chalamon first arrived in France in 1954 .

During his life, Chalamon was a professional soldier and served in the French military as a mountaineer .

Martial arts

In 1947 he began judo training at the age of twelve . This was followed by lessons in boxing and ju-jitsu . From 1958 he studied judo, karate and kendo under Jim Alchek and was influenced in France by martial artists such as Hiroo Mochizuki and Henry Plée . In 1971 he became a student of the grand master Richard Kim and began studying the martial arts Shorinji Ryu (Karate, Kobudo, Tai Chi) with Richard Lee in Paris . In 1974 he opened his first own dojo at the military academy "l'école d'élèves ingénieurs militaires de l'armement" in Arcueil . In 1982 he took over the management of Butokukai France after Richard Lee left it. Chalamon intensified his personal research on Chi ( Qi ) and its technical efficiency. In 1983 he opened a new dojo in Paris , Rue Cler. In 1998 he took his last black belt exam for 6th Dan Shorinji Ryu with Richard Kim.

Developed kata

The kata developed by Jean Chalamon are now an integral part of Shorinji ryu.

  • Nunchaku | The flail
    • Chalamon no nunchaku
  • Tanto | The knife
    • Sekiun no Tanto ichi (with a knife), Sekiun no Tanto ni (with two knives). Chalamon developed this kata at the request of Grand Master Richard Kim .

With the Kobudo Kata series Shodan to Yondan, he realized forms that can be performed both individually and with a partner. The latter, performed in the combinations Shodan-Nidan (20 techniques each) and Sandan-Yondan (40 techniques each), are used to practice the Bunkai .

    • Shodan no Tonfa, Nidan no Tonfa, Sandan no Tonfa, Yondan no Tonfa.
  • Tanto | The knife
    • Shodan no Tanto, Nidan no Tanto, Sandan no Tanto, Yondan no Tanto.
  • Bokken | The wooden sword
    • Shodan no Ken, Nidan no Ken, Sandan no Ken, Yondan no Ken.

Honors

  • 1982 Menkyo Kaiden (Official Teaching License) of Shorinji Ryu from Grand Master Richard Kim.
  • 1983 Appointment as Knight of the Legion of Honor of France by François Mitterrand.
  • In 1999 Jacques Chirac was appointed officer of the French Legion of Honor.
  • 2002 Appointment as honorary president of Butokukai Germany.
  • 2003 Appointment as Kyoshi by Butokukai Germany.
  • 2003 Awarded the 7th Dan of Shorinji Ryu by Zen Bei Butoku Kai.
  • 2005 Awarded the 8th Dan of Shorinji Ryu by Zen Bei Butoku Kai.
  • 2006 appointment as Hanshi by Kokusai Butokukai.
  • 2008 Shorinji Ryu was awarded the 9th Dan by Zen Bei Butoku Kai.
  • 2011 Awarded the 10th Dan Shorinji Ryu by the Kokusai Butokukai.
