history

The name Butokukai goes back to the Dai Nippon Butokukai (DNBK) which was founded in Kyoto , Japan in 1895 with the official approval of the imperial family. Grandmaster Richard Kim became a member of the DNBK in 1939. After the Second World War, the DNBK was dissolved at the urging of the Allies, as the proximity to the paramilitary and ultra-nationalist Black Dragon Society (Armur-Bund) found no goodwill.

After the signing of the peace treaty between the USA and Japan, the DNBK was revived as a private Budo organization in 1953 under the chairmanship of Ōno Kumao . As a close friend of Ōno Kumao, Richard Kim was asked to represent the DNBK outside of Japan. This was the laying of the foundation stone for the Zen Bei Butoku Kai (Great American Martial Arts Association) in 1959 in San Francisco .

Butokukai France was founded in 1972 by Jean Chalamon and Richard Lee in agreement with Grand Master Richard Kim in Paris.

The growing international relations beyond the USA required the establishment of an international martial arts association. So in 1976 the organization Butokukai International came into being under the direction of Richard Kim.

Since 1996 the association AM (Arts Martiaux) Butokukai France is an association registered by Jean Chalamon (French: Association Loi 1901).

In 1982 Jean Chalamon took over the management of Butokukai France as technical director after Richard Lee left it. In 2002 Jean Chalamon appointed his student Max Bouton as technical director of Butokukai France.

The change of the logo became necessary in 2006 in order to clearly differentiate itself from the DNBK.
