Goethestein

The Goethestein is a memorial stone on the Königstein of the Teufelsmauer in the northern Harz foreland in the area of ​​the town of Thale near Weddersleben in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

It is intended to commemorate Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's visit here on September 10, 1784. Goethe was accompanied by the painter Georg Melchior Kraus and wanted to carry out geological investigations. The stone was built around 2005/2006 and goes back to an initiative of the Devil's Wall Weddersleben Association . It was erected at a point that has been passed down as the specific whereabouts of Goethe, as Kraus drew a picture from this point of view.

The Goethestein consists of a boulder , in the front of which a memorial plaque is inserted. The plaque bears the inscription:
