The state of Iceland is rated as liberal in its view of homosexuality .

Legal situation

Homosexuality was legalized in 1940. The age of consent is adjusted to 15 years. Discrimination based on sexual orientation is prohibited by law.

Recognition of same-sex couples

Since 1996 it has been possible for same-sex couples to have their partnership recognized . The stepchild adoption of biological children of a partner by the other was allowed from 1996. Since June 27, 2006, this also extends to the adoption of non-biological children. The path to insemination was also opened up for lesbian couples and women .

On June 11, 2010, the Icelandic parliament unanimously approved the opening of marriage to same-sex couples. The law on opening marriage came into force on June 27, 2010. The first use of the law was made by Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir , who had lived in a registered partnership with author and actress Jónína Leósdóttir since 2002 and was the first head of government in the world to openly live in a same-sex partnership.

The Icelandic Lutheran State Church has allowed same-sex couples to be married in church.

Social situation

Iceland is one of the northern European countries that are open to the rights of gays and lesbians. The main homosexual community is in the capital Reykjavík . Every year in August there is a Christopher Street Day in Reykjavík.

The country's most important LGBT organization is Samtökin '78 .
