Homosexuality is legal in Bosnia and Herzegovina , but only accepted in parts of society.

Homosexual acts have been legalized in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1996 in the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and since 1998 in the territory of the Republika Srpska . The age of consent is uniformly 14 years.

Anti-discrimination laws

An anti-discrimination law to protect sexual orientation has existed since 2003 .

Recognition of same-sex couples

State recognition has not yet taken place in the form of same-sex marriage or in the form of a registered partnership . At the end of October 2018, the government in Bosnia and Herzegovina announced that it would enable a registered civil partnership institute for same-sex couples.

Social situation

Due to the consequences of the war in Bosnia in the 1990s, the situation of homosexual people in Bosnia and Herzegovina is economically difficult. A small LGBT community can be found in the capital Sarajevo . In 2008 a four-day queer festival took place in Sarajevo . Organizations like Logos and Organization Q campaigned for the rights of homosexual people in the country.

In 2019 the first Gay Pride (rainbow parade) took place in Sarajevo. Despite counter-demonstrations, there were no incidents.
