The laws on homosexuality in Luxembourg are liberal; the social climate in the country allows homosexual people to develop unimpaired in public life.

The criminality of homosexuality was lifted in 1794. The age of consent was set consistently at 16 years in Art. 372 Code pénal (Criminal Code) in 1992 .

Anti-discrimination laws

In Luxembourg there are anti-discrimination laws to protect sexual identity in labor and civil law. Homosexual Luxembourg nationals can serve in the army .

Recognition of same-sex marriages

Luxembourg has legally recognized same-sex partnerships nationwide through the introduction of Registered Partnerships since 2004. An opening of the marriage as in neighboring Belgium took place on June 18, 2014 with 56 to 4 votes in the House of Representatives. The law on opening marriage was signed by the Grand Duke Henri on July 4th, 2014 and published on July 17th, 2014. Marriages can be concluded since January 1st, 2015.

Social situation

Luxembourg is one of the generally tolerant states when it comes to homosexuality. Homosexuality is largely respected and accepted in the population. The head of government Xavier Bettel is avowedly homosexual and was the first EU head of government to marry his long-term partner on May 15, 2015.

According to a Eurobarometer survey published in December 2006, 58 percent of the Luxembourg population support same-sex marriage and 39 percent are in favor of same-sex couples' right to adopt children.

There is a small lesbian and gay scene in the state capital of Luxembourg. The most important, current LGBT organization is Rosa Lëtzebuerg (Pink Luxembourg) . This organization was founded on June 26, 1996 and in 2004 had 220 members.
