- Istanbul / Turkey : The bomb attack on a shopping center in the Istanbul district of Güngören , which caused 17 deaths and 154 injuries on July 27, 2008, is said to have been cleared up, according to the Turkish Interior Minister Besir Atalay. There are eight suspects since the mid-week in custody .
- Munich / Germany : Siemens AG wants to sell 80 percent of its Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices division with the Gigaset family of telephones on October 1, 2008 to the investment company Arques Industries . Employment guarantees are to be given for the locations in Bocholt with 1,400 employees and Munich with 250 employees.
- Pretoria / South Africa : Tens of thousands of people celebrate Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday at the central event of the African National Congress (ANC) .

- Kunduz / Afghanistan : An assassin blows himself up near a Bundeswehr patrol. Three soldiers are injured, one dies in October 2009 from the long-term effects.
- Nouakchott / Mauritania : President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi as well as the prime minister and interior minister were arrested by insurgent officers during a coup in Mauritania .

- Caracas / Venezuela : In Venezuela, 38 Warao Indians die from a rabies epidemic caused by vampire bats.

- Beijing / China : After an opening ceremony staged by Zhang Yimou , Chinese President Hu Jintao opens the XXIX. Olympic games .
- Studénka / Czech Republic : Around 10:30 CEST there was a train accident when the EC 108 drove into the rubble of a collapsing road bridge. At least ten people are killed and at least 31 are injured in the accident.
- Stuttgart / Germany : Jens Lehmann announces his resignation as goalkeeper of the national soccer team .
- Tbilisi / Georgia : To 00:45 CET Georgia declared the internationally unrecognized Republic of South Ossetia to the war . South Ossetia is part of Georgia, but is almost exclusively inhabited by the Ossetian ethnic group , which is hardly represented in the rest of Georgia.

- Beijing / China : A Chinese man attacks two US tourists with their city guide and kills one of them. The second tourist and the guide are injured. After the bloody act, the perpetrator falls from the historic drum tower .
- Zurich / Switzerland : Around 820,000 people from all over Europe come to the Street Parade on Zurich's lake basin, which begins in the early afternoon with the parade of 27 decorated “Love Mobiles” and this year the motto is “Friendship”.

- Boumerdes / Algeria : Eight people were killed and 19 people injured in a suicide attack on a gendarmerie post.
- Georgia : The Caucasus conflict against the South Ossetian protective power Russia continues to expand , Sergei Bagapsch has also declared a state of war in the breakaway region of Abkhazia . Russian fighter jets bomb Tbilisi airport , Poti port and Gori city . Georgia has declared a unilateral ceasefire for South Ossetia, the implementation of which is questioned by Russia. In the Black Sea there was heavy sea fighting between the Georgian Navy and the Russian Black Sea Fleet , which set up a sea blockade off the Georgian coast .
- Kuqa / China : After a series of more than 20 detonations and shootings in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region , police kill seven men while soldiers cordon off the city. The background to the riot is not clear.
- Beijing / China : Michael Phelps has won the first of the eight gold medals he was aiming for. The American won over 400 m medley and at the same time improved his own world record by 1.5 seconds.
- Toronto / Canada : A firefighter is killed in an explosion in a propane gas system . 13,000 residents have to be temporarily evacuated.

- Moscow / Russia : After five days of war in the Caucasus , Russian President Medvedev has announced a halt to military operations in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and a withdrawal of Russian soldiers.

- Kassel / Germany : The head is put back on during the restoration work on the Kassel Hercules .
- Luxembourg / Luxembourg : According to Eurostat , in the second quarter of 2008 the gross domestic product of the euro zone fell by 0.2% after seasonal and calendar adjustments compared to the first quarter of 2008 , including in Italy and France by 0.3% and in Germany by 0.5%. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the gross domestic product in Germany increased by 1.8% in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the previous year and by 3.1% in the second. Seasonally and calendar adjusted, the corresponding rates are 2.6% and 1.7%, so growth has weakened in a seasonally adjusted view. Second quarter of 2008 compared to the first quarter of 2008, GDP contracted by 0.5%, seasonally and calendar adjusted.

- Durach / Germany : A single-engine sport aircraft gets caught in a high-voltage line. The couple, stuck at a height of 20 meters, are rescued by the fire brigade after two hours.
- Havana / Cuba : Tropical storm Fay claims 4 lives in the Caribbean.
- Beijing / China : Michael Phelps wins the eighth gold medal, beating the record held by Mark Spitz since 1972 . Britta Steffen wins gold in the 50 m freestyle.
- Beijing / China : The United Kingdom's Olympic athletes win 8 gold medals in Beijing in one weekend. The British cyclists in particular are successful in Beijing with Bradley Wiggins , Chris Hoy , Rebecca Romero and Nicole Cooke both individually and as a team with Jamie Staff / Jason Kenny / Chris Hoy and dominate Olympic cycling.
- Beijing / China : The Olympic athletes of the People's Republic of China win eight gold medals in Beijing in one day and lead the medal table with 35 gold medals. Among other things, Wang Jiao wins gold in wrestling, Zou Kai wins gold in floor exercise, Xiao Qin wins gold in horse-drawn gymnastics , Guo Yue , Wang Nan and Zhang Yining win gold in table tennis doubles, Lin Dan wins gold in badminton singles and Guo Jingjing receives Gold from the 3 meter springboard in synchronized jumping.

- Beijing / China : The Olympic athletes of the People's Republic of China dominate the table tennis competitions . The Chinese team with Wang Hao , Wang Liqin and Ma Lin won 3-0 against the Germans Timo Boll , Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Christian Süß , who achieved silver. In the women's category, the Chinese athletes Zhang Yining , Wang Nan and Guo Yue also beat Singapore 3-0.
- Beijing / China : Russian Jelena Issinbajewa wins gold in the pole vault and reaches a new world record for women with a jump of 5.05 meters.

- Washington, DC / United States : Democratic presidential nominee-designate Barack Obama names Joe Biden as a candidate for vice president.

- Beijing / China : The Kenyan Samuel Wanjiru wins the marathon with a new Olympic record. The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games begins at around 8 p.m. local time . The most successful nation is the United States with 112 medals, although Chinese athletes have won more gold medals. 41 medals go to Germany , seven to Switzerland and three to Austria .

- Wülfrath / Germany : The break in an overpressure safety device was the reason for the gas accident in a chemical plant in Wülfrath with 53 injured. A mixture with the chemical dicyclopentadiene escaped in a gaseous cloud.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : From Allianz SE that takes Commerzbank the Dresdner Bank for 9.8 billion euros .
- Gulf of Mexico : Hurricane Gustav moves over Cuba with wind speeds of more than 230 km / h and causes severe damage there. Meanwhile, the metropolis of New Orleans , which the storm is moving towards, is being completely cleared.
