Naina Devi ( Hindi नैना देवी, Nainā Devī) is a small town in the Bilaspur district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh . In 2001, Naina Devi was home to 1,161 people, with men making up almost two thirds of the population. The city is known for its Naina Devi Temple.

Naina Devi Temple

The famous temple of the goddess Naina Devi is located on a mountain. It is on National Highway No. 21 and a connecting road that leads up the mountain, as well as a staircase. There is also a cable car connection. The Gobindsagar reservoir , which was created by the Bhakra dam , can also be overlooked from the mountains .

On August 3, 2008, a mass panic broke out as tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims were on their way to the Naina Devi Temple. More than 145 people are said to have died, mainly women and children. The misfortune was caused by rumors of a landslide and rock fall in the crowd. A short time later, a railing is said to have collapsed under the pressure of the crowds. Another report claims the deaths were caused by panic resulting from a fight. Yet another report blames the police.
