The Gotha Zoo is a small zoological garden at the foot of the Kleiner Seeberg in the residential city of Gotha . Around 600 animals from around 140 species can be observed on an area of around 6 hectares.

Livestock

In addition to European animals such as eagle owls and other indigenous owls (a total of ten different types of owls), beavers , wolves and bison , rare domestic and farm animals can also be observed. Another main component of the zoo are many animals from South America , including guinea pigs , capybaras , rheas and great maras as well as collar peccaries . There are also predators to see such as Amur tigers , Chinese leopards , dingoes and northern lynx . At the zoo entrance, steppe foxes and Syrian brown bears share a large enclosure. There are three species of primates, including rhesus monkeys and anubis baboons .

The aviary for Baltic and North Sea birds can be entered by visitors. Here you can also get to the bird house, where you can see fruit bats and other small animals.

Many of the old, unsuitable enclosures, which were much too small, have been renewed or rebuilt to this day. A new facility for the dingoes and the Amur tigers is worth mentioning here . The bear enclosure was also renewed and enlarged by 2005.

The zoo participates in numerous international conservation and breeding programs.

Visitor facilities and events

The zoo also has two playgrounds for children and a café, which is run by the zoo's association. In addition, carriage rides through the zoo and feedings are offered.

Numerous events take place in the zoo every year, including Easter. Children's day is aimed at the younger guests. At the zoo festival in September there are many handicrafts, carriage rides and pony rides as well as commented feedings. The Halloween festival awaits with offers such as pumpkin carving, campfires and horror tours to wolves, bats and owls.
