The Manas International Airport ( Kyrgyz "Манас" эл-аралык аэропорту , Russian Международный аэропорт "Манас" ) is the airport of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek . The airport is located 28 km northwest of the capital. It is named after the Kyrgyz national poem Manas .
The Manas Air Base was located on the site . This military airfield was approved by the Air Force of the United States operated by the end of 2001 to June 2014 "Manas Transit Center". The US and other allies used the base to transport and supply their armed forces in Afghanistan . A total of 5.5 million US soldiers were flown in and out of Afghanistan via Manas.
The IATA code FRU is derived from Frunze , the name of the city of Bishkek between 1926 and 1991.
Air Force Base
In 2002, the US Air Force built due to its geographical proximity to Afghanistan , the Manas Air Base . The base was originally named after the New York Fire Department Chief Peter J. Ganci, Jr. ( Ganci Air Base ), who was among the victims in the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York . The runway is one of the longest in the region.
The air force base was also used by eleven other states active in Afghanistan. In 2006 there were around 1200 NATO soldiers permanently there . The base was mainly used to supply the US and ISAF forces in Afghanistan. The annual rent for the base increased from $ 20 million to $ 150 million in 2006. The US soldiers are unpopular with the population, not least because of the shooting of an unarmed Uzbek and a number of other incidents.
On February 3, 2009, the Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev announced the closure of the air force base. According to Bakiyev, the United States is not prepared to pay higher compensation for the stationing of troops in Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyz government has been promised around two billion dollars in Russian financial aid for the closure. According to information from WikiLeaks , China is said to have pledged $ 3 billion to close the air base for the United States. At the beginning of March 2009, the Kyrgyz parliament also decided to terminate the usage agreements with the other states that were allied with the USA at the time. In June 2009, Kyrgyzstan allowed the USA to continue using the air force base. In October 2013, the US began the nine-month move from Manas to the Romanian Constanta Airport .
