history

In 1057 Rupert, the first representative of the noble Castell family , was mentioned in a document in the village of Castell . In 1202 the family was raised to the status of imperial count , the then county essentially comprised areas between the western slope of the Steigerwald and the Main . In 1398 King Wenzel also granted the Counts of Castell the right to mint . In 1457, under Count Wilhelm II, financial ruin threatened, the county became a fiefdom of the Würzburg monastery , but was able to maintain its imperial estate in the following decades . In the years 1546 to 1559, the Castell introduced the Reformation in the county. After the division of the county in 1546, Count Georg II temporarily moved into the old castle in Rüdenhausen and in 1556 chose the moated castle as the permanent residence and seat of government. This established the line of Count Castell-Rüdenhausen. Count Konrad stayed in Castell, Count Heinrich took over maternal inheritance (parts of the county of Wertheim ) and built a new castle in Remlingen . Since neither Count Konrad nor Count Heinrich had male descendants, the county was divided again in 1597 between the sons of Georg II - Wolfgang II (Castell-Remlingen) and Gottfried (Castell-Rüdenhausen). In 1803 the Castell-Rüdenhausen line died out. Two brothers of the Castell-Remlingen line founded the new Castell-Castell ( Albrecht-Friedrich Carl ) and Castell-Rüdenhausen ( Christian Friedrich ) lines.

During the Napoleonic Wars , the Grafschaft Castell was mediatized in 1806 and incorporated into the Kingdom of Bavaria . The previous sovereigns were appointed hereditary " Imperial Councilors of the Bavarian Crown ".
