List of the counties of Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of counties in Germany contains an (incomplete) list of historically tangible counties of the Holy Roman Empire on the territory of the present Federal Republic of Germany . In the course of their history, some counties have risen in rank, for example to principalities or duchies. The list is structured according to today's federal states , although the former territory of these counties may extend over several of today's states or beyond today's territory of Germany. Counties of the empire whose territories lay completely outside the borders of today's Germany are not taken into account. The Margraviate of Baden , the Margraviate of Brandenburg , the Margraviate of Meißen , the Landgraviate of Hesse , the Landgraviate of Thuringia and the Palatinate of the Rhine are also not taken into account , as the titles of Landgrave , Margrave and Palatine, especially for these examples , were in fact equal to that of the Duke .
