In the 12th century, the hilltop castle was the seat of the Counts of Homburg. In 1330 they received city ​​rights from Ludwig the Bavarian for their town at the foot of the Schlossberg. They rebuilt the castle in the second half of the 16th century into a renaissance castle and then from a fortress .

During the Reunion , King Louis XIV had the fortress builder Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban expand the fortress and fortify the city. The basic structure of Homburg's old town dates from this time. The fortifications were first razed in 1697 and finally in 1714 and served as a quarry for the construction of Karlsberg Castle . From 1981 the facility was exposed and partially restored.
