List of territories in the Holy Roman Empire

This list of territories of the Holy Roman Empire contains territories that have belonged to the Holy Roman Empire, at least temporarily. Under territories of the Holy Roman Empire which are initially imperial estates to understand that in the Reichstag in Kurfürstenrat , Imperial Council and Imperial Cities College are represented. In particular, imperial counts were mostly not represented at all or only represented by curiate votes in the Reichstag and did not form an imperial estate with full voting rights.

The links in the alphabetical list refer either directly to an article of the same name, in the case of cities usually to the general city article or to higher-level territories or regions or to noble families. The problem here is that in smaller areas, it is usually not possible to separate territorial and family history. In the ecclesiastical territories, the difficulty is between spiritual and secular spheres separate. The articles on Kurmainz , Kurköln and Kurtrier in contrast to the diocese articles (as a diocese ) are often an exception. However, a distinction is often made between the diocese and the prince-bishopric / bishopric .

Further difficulties arise from the fact that the name of a free city is often also the name of a neighboring principality to which the city just did not belong or from whose sphere of influence it had become over time (e.g. Lübeck, Nuremberg, Bremen) . Furthermore, certain territorial names show a significant change in meaning (especially Austria, Bavaria, Saxony).

Finally, the territories of the Holy Roman Empire are to be demarcated from those territories that existed at the time of the Holy Roman Empire and had German-speaking parts of the population, but were not part of the Holy Roman Empire. Often these territories also had dynastic connections to territories within the empire (especially Prussia, Hungary, Schleswig, see the list at the end of the article).
