The county of Eberstein was an imperial territory that existed from around 1085 to 1660. At the beginning the sovereigns were only barons, from 1195 onwards the title of count was used. The family castle that gave it its name was Eberstein Castle (Alt-Eberstein). The castle is located in what is now Baden-Baden 's Ebersteinburg district . Later on, until the family died out in the male line in 1660, they resided at Neu Eberstein near Gernsbach .

With one exception, the sons of the Eberstein family were the rulers for the entire period of its existence . Only Count Simon (died before 1281) was only descended from this count line on his mother's side, his father was Heinrich II. , Count in Zweibrücken .
