The diocese of Sitten ( Latin Dioecesis Sedunensis , French Diocèse de Sion ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Switzerland and comprises most of the canton of Valais , with the exception of the parishes of Finhaut, Vernayaz, Salvan and Saint-Maurice / Mex, which belong to the territorial abbey of Saint-Maurice and the parish of Saint-Gingolph , which belongs to the diocese of Annecy . In addition, the territory of the diocese includes the Aigle district in Vaud , with the exception of the Villeneuve parish, which belongs to the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg .
In the 15th and 16th centuries, Uff der Flüe Castle , also Auf der Flüe in Naters, was the bishop's residence for a time and gave its name to it. The seat of the bishop and the cathedral chapter today is the Cathedral of Our Lady ( Notre-Dame de Sion or du Glarian ) in Sion . From 1995 to July 2014, Bishop Norbert Brunner was the chief shepherd of the traditional diocese, which had a major influence on the history of the canton of Valais . Since then, Jean-Marie Lovey CRB has been Bishop of Sion.
