Johann (Goerlitz)
Johann von Görlitz (born June 22, 1370 in Prague , † March 1, 1396 in Neuzelle Abbey ) was the only Duke of Görlitz .
Life
Johann was born as the third child in the fourth marriage of Charles IV. To Elisabeth of Pomerania and was awarded the titles of Margrave of Moravia and Margrave of Brandenburg at the age of three .
In 1377 Charles IV established a duchy for Johann, his youngest living son, from the Landvogtei Görlitz in Upper Lusatia , which also included eastern areas of Lower Lusatia and the southern part of Neumark . Between 1386 and 1388 Johann was also administrator of the Duchy of Luxembourg .
On February 10, 1388, Johann married Richardis von Mecklenburg († 1400) in Prague , a daughter of the Mecklenburg Duke and Swedish King Albrecht III. The only daughter of Johanns and Richardis was Elisabeth , Duchess of Görlitz and Luxembourg (1390-1451), who first married in 1409 to Anton von Burgund , Duke of Brabant (1384-1415) and after his death from 1418 with Johann III. from Bavaria was married.
During his reign, immediately after the Prague Jewish pogroms in 1389, Johann issued a mandate that allowed the expulsion of Jews from Görlitz , in contrast to the Jewish privilege granted in 1383 by Governor Beneš von Dubá for the region of Budissin (Bautzen). His chancellor and closest confidante was the Prague Archbishop Olbram of Škvorec during the entire reign .
Johann died at the age of only 26, probably from poison, in the Neuzelle monastery . The areas of his duchy fell back into the old borders of 1377.
