The Esperstedt – Oldisleben railway line (Esperstedt-Oldisleben Railway) was opened by the Central Administration for Secundairbahnen Herrmann Bachstein (CV) on May 4, 1907. Two concessions were required for this, because Esperstedt, the starting point of the four-kilometer route, was in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt , the end point of Oldisleben in the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach ; There were no intermediate stops.

The railway was planned as part of a route from Esperstedt to Greußen. Because of the potash mine ( Potash Works Union of Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst ) and the Oldisleben sugar factory , construction of this section was brought forward. It also initially brought the expected income. But when these declined considerably after potash mining was discontinued in 1922, the existence of the railway was endangered. It was secured by the fact that CV incorporated the - legally dependent - company in 1923 into the newly founded Thüringische Eisenbahn-AG (Theag).

After the Second World War, the state of Thuringia nationalized the Theag. Since April 1, 1949, the line belonged to the Deutsche Reichsbahn . This stopped the passenger traffic on May 31, 1959, although at that time it had taken an unprecedented boom with five to six daily train pairs. The freight was carried out until 30 June 1992nd The official decommissioning date was May 22, 1993.

After the German regional railways failed to reactivate their freight traffic in 2009, the route was de-dedicated on June 1, 2012.
