The Thüringische Eisenbahn-AG (Theag) in Weimar was a subsidiary of the Centralverwaltung for Secundairbahnen Herrmann Bachstein (CV). The railway company existed from 1923 to 1945.

The Central Administration for Secundairbahnen owned a number of branch lines in the small states of Thuringia, which ran into economic difficulties in the years after the First World War . The management of the CV saw the way to solve these problems in the merging of the small independent railway companies into a joint company. These had repeatedly been used in public to justify the demand for nationalization and had repeatedly led to strike by railway employees.

The Centralverwaltung therefore converted an "AG for railway and tram companies" founded in 1921 into the "Thuringian Railway Corporation (Theag)" on October 6, 1923. The following - previously legally independent - companies have been incorporated into this holding company:

The management took over the CV. This network with a total length of 120 kilometers - 34 km of which is narrow gauge - was reduced in 1933 by the Buttstädt-Rastenberger Railway, which was withdrawn at that time and was taken over by the Rastenberg-Hardisleben Railway Association .

The story of the “ Buchenwaldbahn ”, which led from Weimar to the Buchenwald concentration camp, is a dark chapter . It branched off from the Weimar - Großrudestedter railway in Schöndorf and was built by the SS with the help of prisoners. Since it was standard gauge, the CV had to expand the Weimar - Schöndorf section to three tracks. The CV started operations in the summer of 1944.

After the end of the Second World War, the lines of the Thuringian Railway Company were transferred to the state of Thuringia in 1946. The company was initially referred to as the "Thuringian Railways", from July 1, 1948, as the "Thuringian State Railways" and from April 1, 1949 it was subordinated to the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The further fate and more precise dates are described for the individual railways.
