Oldisleben sugar factory

The Museum Zuckerfabrik Oldisleben is a former factory for the production of sugar from sugar beet in Oldisleben in the Thuringian district of Kyffhäuserkreis . The sugar factory building complex is a listed building as the Oldisleben sugar factory and is an industrial monument of food production and luxury goods production.

history

On January 30, 1872 the factory was founded under the name Zuckerfabrik Oldisleben, registered cooperative with unlimited liability . On February 4, 1872, it was decided to build the sugar factory right next to the sugar boiler, which was built around 1835. Shortly afterwards construction work began, the company Röhrig & König was commissioned with the technical equipment and the 41.5 meter high chimney was built. In February 1872 the building and the grounds of the sugar boiler were sold by the landowners Göring and Dittmann to the cooperative for 20,000 marks. The first campaign began on February 27, 1873 .

The sugar factory had six steam engines from 1882 to 1925 as well as the last diffusion battery in Europe, manufactured in 1906. The lime kiln with a water box elevator was built in 1898.

The last sugar beet campaign took place there from September 26th to December 18th, 1990 , during which 6639 tons of white sugar were produced. Until then, it was Europe's last sugar factory with the original technology from 1872: It worked with diffusion batteries, steam engines and other historical devices.

Then the decision was made to keep the factory in its original state as an industrial museum or adventure museum for posterity and to place it under monument protection .

present

The Oldisleben sugar factory is now (2016) a technical monument of Südzucker AG and a museum. It can be viewed after registration.

You can see an exhibition with historical machine tools and agricultural equipment as well as technical systems from the pioneering days of the sugar industry. The large steam engine from 1915 with 300 hp has been restored and reactivated. The museum is one of the funding projects of the German Foundation for Monument Protection . Before the tour, a 20-minute film sets the mood for the special features of this sugar factory.
